"The Cartography of Personal Identity:
Mapping a Course for the Future"
The philosophical problem of personal identity is the problem of explaining what is required in order for a person to continue to exist from an earlier time to a later time. This problem has loomed large, though in different ways, in the Western and the Indian philosophical traditions. What happens when these two traditions are brought into conversation is what the Columbia Society for Comparative Philosophy has chosen to try and find out.
In this lecture, the philosopher Mark Siderits lays out a taxonomy of possible views on the issue of personal identity. Drawing on the resources of both classical Indian and contemporary analytic philosophy, Siderits applies this taxonomy toward some of the more important philosophical challenges that confront the most plausible views on this topic.
